SHORT BIO
I am Professor of Leadership and Vice Rector (Research and International Affairs) at the University of Limassol.  Previously, I was a full Professor at two Scottish universities: Edinburgh Napier and Stirling.  I entered academia, mid-career, in 2009 via a UK Senior Foundation for Management Education/Economic and Social Research Council Fellowship.  Prior to this academic career, I served as a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Air Force and as Head of Education, Training and Professional Development at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

My research (primarily Mode 2) covers the broad spectrum of leadership including its history to the current state of the field.  In detail, I am extremely interested in developing models of leadership, particularly in the areas of mission leadership and empowerment.  I am Editor and principal author of Public and Third Sector Leadership: Experience Speaks (2016), sole author of Leadership: the current state of play (2019) and The Rangers Football Club: A descent into chaos, a resultant chaos and an emergence from chaos.  In 2019, I was invited to be Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Management Development ― a post which he held to 2022.

I am an active educator: my teaching is mostly at the postgraduate and post-experience-level.  In line with my practitioner background, I am extremely interested in executive education, praxis and public engagement.  I am one of three authors in the (2023) Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) White Paper The Future is now:  Redefining Executive Education for Turbulent Times.  A provocation paper on the future of executive education.

Notable external appoints include/have included: a member of the CABS Executive Education Committee; a full Council Member of the Foundation for Management Education; a previous Non-Executive Member/Lay Member of the Medical Directorate within NHS Scotland (previous Board Member of the Anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine Specialty Training Board and the Surgical Specialty Training Board) (2010 – 2016)); and invited non-clinical member of the Advisory Committee of the Academy of Clinical Educators.

I have travelled extensively to the Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, India, the Middle East (including Palestine) and Asia in recruiting, admission and conversion roles.  Increasingly, I have been involved in ambassadorial business development/engagement roles.

I am a graduate of the CABS 3DP (Deans and Directors Programme).  I enjoy employment with a strong bias towards human capital, strategy and policy development in organisations committed to people development, culture change and high service standards.
